In the Spring of 1987, Joe Foley galvanized a diverse group of caring individuals to establish a home away from home for families to stay while their critically ill children were hospitalized or receiving medical treatment.

Thanks to ongoing support from the community, our Gateway to Giving Campaign 2006 continues to be an amazing success. In 2007 the Portland Ronald McDonald House expanded from 15 to 21 bedrooms! Mothers, fathers and grandparents come from all parts of Maine and New Hampshire, as well as other states and countries, to this special place they call home for any length of time, from one day to more than a year. Many nights the House has been forced to turn families away because a room was not available.

The House operates 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. It is maintained by a staff of five and a dedicated group of more than 300 volunteers ranging in age from six to eighty.

From the moment a family rings the doorbell, they are greeted with a friendly smile by a caring volunteer and drawn into the warmth of the House. The environment provides the emotional support needed to get them through the stress of having an ill child.

Although there is a nominal charge of $10 a night, many families are unable to pay due to the financial burden caused by the medical needs of their child. Lengthy hospital stays for premature babies, medical complications, loss of income, and countless other hardships confront these families. The knowledge that the basic necessities of food and shelter will be provided by the House allows the families to concentrate all of their energies on their loved ones. Grant monies and private donations allow families to stay without financial worries.
